Throat Chakra

Throat Chakra:  I SPEAK

The Vishuddha or Throat Chakra is the fifth chakra in this energetic system.  The Sanskrit translation of Vishuddha is “especially pure” or “purification”.

The throat chakra is associated with the ether element, also known as Akasha.  It is associated with sound vibration, which travels through the ether.  It is located in the region of the neck and shoulders.  It is symbolized as a sixteen-petaled lotus, the sixteen petals representing the sixteen intersecting nadis or energetic pathways at this chakra.  There is a downward facing triangle, symbolizing thought manifesting into speech.

Vishuddha is the energetic center related to sound vibration, self-expression, and creativity.  The realm of consciousness controls, creates, transmits, and receives communication both within the inner world, and the outer world; the microcosm to the macrocosm.  Thoughts, through sound vibration, become words that permeate the ether, and carry a power greater than one could imagine.

The bija mantra or seed syllable is Ham; when chanted the sound vibration cleanses and heals this chakra.  The throat chakra is visualized in a deep blue color. Within the lotus resides Airavata, the sacred, Divine white elephant of the clouds.

We have now moved from air at the heart level, to ether at the throat level.  One more step away from the physical and toward the subtle spirit.  Within the subtler realms, sound and vibration are actually the most dense (followed by light and thought).  But step one is sound and communication, which in and of itself allows one to transcend the limitations of the physical body.

It is believed by many of the eastern traditions such as Hinduism that the entire manifest universe came into being by the utterance of the primordial sound OM.  This caused the cascade of vibration working through each element, becoming denser and denser until manifesting into physical matter.  This was actually demonstrated by a scientist named Ernst Chladni in the 1800’s.  He scattered sand on a fixed steel plate and then rubbed a violin bow along the edge of the plate.  Each vibrational note yielded a completely different, intricate, and beautiful mandala pattern as the sand danced into place.

Communication both shapes our current reality and creates our future reality.  Using words as tools, we quickly learn from a young age how to get the things we want – shaping our reality.  In time, we learn what works, what doesn’t work and refine as needed.  Whether good or bad, armed with our thoughts, words, and deeds – we are the co-creators of our own little microcosm within the macrocosm.

Without the ability to communicate, we become isolated, separate, and cut off from a very vital, nourishing, and necessary energy current.  Just as the Hindus believe that sound creates all matter through vibration, since they are so intimately linked, that matter could not survive without the vibration to uphold it.  So too as humans, without even the most basic form of sound for use in communication makes for a difficult path.

It is said that damage occurs at the astral or subtle levels long before physical symptoms appear.  Chronic Vishuddha imbalance can manifest physically in a variety of ways, including sore throat, stiff neck, colds, thyroid problems, and hearing problems.

The Zodiac signs are represented by the four gross elements:  earth, water, fire, and air.  Ether is the subtlest element, and therefore encompasses and permeates all.
